Day three took us on a short drive to Assisi, home of St. Francis — and once again, the Rick Steves team delivered. Walking through a grand cathedral is impressive. Walking through with a guide who actually explains what you’re seeing? Game changer. Without context it’s “beautiful ceiling.” With context it’s centuries of art, faith, politics, and symbolism unfolding before you. Our guides were knowledgeable enough to be college professors — but far more entertaining. Their passion brought the history to life in ways we never could have discovered on our own. (Photos D) That evening, the adventure continued with a truffle hunt and farm tour. We learned how these little culinary treasures are found — and then, thankfully, how they’re eaten. The meal that followed? Multiple courses of regional dishes, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Thoughtful, precise, and unlike anything we’ve had before. Once again, our expectations weren’t just met — they were happily exceeded. (Photos E)

Hilltop Assisi

Stone houses climb the hillside beneath a moody Umbrian sky — timeless, peaceful, and unmistakably Italian.

Flowered Facade

In Assisi, even a simple stone wall becomes art — with terracotta pots, climbing vines, and a quiet nod to faith.

Truffle Talk

Before the hunt began, we learned that finding truffles is part science, part instinct — and part very talented dog.

Truffle Feast

After the hunt came the reward — a cozy dining room, good company, and plates rich with earthy Umbrian flavor.

Earthy Elegance

Fresh truffles shaved over creamy perfection — paired, of course, with a bold Umbrian red.
